Dry needling (medical acupuncture)

What is dry needling?

Dry needling, also known as medical acupuncture, is a modern therapeutic technique that involves inserting fine, sterile needles–up to 8 times thinner than a standard medical injection needle–into specific trigger points (tight knots in muscles) to release tension, improve blood flow, and reduce pain.

How I incorporate dry needling into my treatments

Dry needling is a key part of my approach to sports massage, helping clients achieve the best possible results from each session. When working with a client, it can take an entire 60-minute session to deactivate trigger points in just one area. By incorporating dry needling, I can:

  • Quickly and effectively identify and deactivate trigger points.

  • Treat a larger surrounding area that may be affected by dysfunction.

  • Enhance overall muscle recovery and movement efficiency.

This approach allows me to address not only the direct source of pain but also secondary issues caused by muscular imbalances, ultimately helping clients get their bodies back to where they want them to be faster.

FAQs

How is dry needling different from acupuncture?

While both use fine needles, dry needling is specifically aimed at treating muscular trigger points based on Western medical principles, rather than focusing on traditional Chinese meridians and energy flow.

What conditions can dry needling help with?

Dry needling can be beneficial for various musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Muscle tightness and knots

  • Chronic pain

  • Sports injuries

  • Postural imbalances

  • Restricted mobility

Is dry needling painful?

Most clients experience minimal discomfort, often describing a mild twitch response or a dull ache during treatment. The sensation usually subsides quickly.

Pricing & booking information

Does dry needling cost extra? No, I do not charge extra for incorporating dry needling into my existing sports massage appointments. It is included as part of the treatment when appropriate and always with the client's consent.

How do I book? There is no need to book specifically for a dry needling session. I will always check with clients if they are comfortable with me using dry needling alongside other sports and deep tissue techniques.

If you would prefer to receive only dry needling without any massage techniques, please contact me directly. We can discuss your needs and determine the appropriate appointment length for your treatment.
